How to Set SMART Goals and Achieve Them in 2024

Do you have goals that you want to achieve in your life? Whether it is personal, professional, or academic, having goals can help you stay focused, motivated, and accountable. However, not all goals are created equal. Some goals are vague, unrealistic, or irrelevant, which can lead to frustration, disappointment, or failure. That is why you need to set SMART goals.

SMART is an acronym that stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. These are the criteria that can help you create effective and meaningful goals. In this post, I will explain what SMART goals are, why they are important, and how to create them. By the end of this post, you will be able to set SMART goals and achieve them in 2024.

What is SMART?

SMART is a simple and practical framework that can help you set clear and realistic goals. It helps you define your goals in a way that makes them easy to understand, track, and accomplish. Here is what each letter of SMART stands for:

  • Specific: A specific goal is clear and well-defined. It answers the questions of who, what, where, when, why, and how. For example, instead of saying “I want to learn a new language”, you can say “I want to learn Japanese online by taking a course on Duolingo”.
  • Measurable: A measurable goal is quantifiable and trackable. It has indicators that can help you monitor your progress and evaluate your results. For example, instead of saying “I want to lose weight”, you can say “I want to lose 10 kilograms in 3 months by following a healthy diet and exercising regularly”.
  • Achievable: An achievable goal is realistic and attainable. It challenges you but does not overwhelm you. It considers your abilities, resources, and constraints. For example, instead of saying “I want to be a millionaire”, you can say “I want to save 100,000 rupiah every month by cutting down on unnecessary expenses and investing in a mutual fund”.
  • Relevant: A relevant goal is aligned with your values, vision, and purpose. It supports your other goals and contributes to your overall success. For example, instead of saying “I want to travel the world”, you can say “I want to visit Japan next year because I love Japanese culture and I want to practice my language skills”.
  • Time-bound: A time-bound goal has a deadline and a sense of urgency. It creates a clear timeline for when you will start and finish your goal. It also helps you prioritize your tasks and avoid procrastination. For example, instead of saying “I want to write a book”, you can say “I want to write a 50,000-word novel by November 30th by writing 1,667 words every day”.

Why is SMART Important?

Setting SMART goals can help you achieve more in less time and with less stress. Here are some of the benefits of setting SMART goals:

  • They help you clarify your vision and focus your efforts on what matters most.
  • They help you use your resources wisely and efficiently.
  • They help you measure your progress and adjust your actions accordingly.
  • They help you celebrate your achievements and reward yourself for your hard work.
  • They help you motivate yourself and others to take action.

How to Create SMART Goals

Creating SMART goals is not difficult if you follow these steps:

  1. Write down your goal in one sentence.
  2. Check if your goal meets the SMART criteria by asking yourself the following questions:
    • Is it specific? Does it answer the who, what, where, when, why, and how questions?
    • Is it measurable? Does it have indicators that can help me track my progress and evaluate my results?
    • Is it achievable? Is it realistic and attainable given my abilities, resources, and constraints?
    • Is it relevant? Is it aligned with my values, vision, and purpose? Does it support my other goals and contribute to my overall success?
    • Is it time-bound? Does it have a deadline and a sense of urgency? Does it create a clear timeline for when I will start and finish my goal?
  3. If your goal does not meet the SMART criteria, revise it until it does.
  4. Write down the actions that you need to take to achieve your goal.
  5. Write down the potential obstacles that might prevent you from achieving your goal and how you will overcome them.
  6. Write down the rewards that you will give yourself for achieving your goal.
  7. Review your goal regularly and update it as needed.

Here is an example of how to create a SMART goal:

Goal: I want to improve my English skills.

SMART Goal: I want to improve my English skills by scoring at least 90% on the TOEFL test by December 31st, 2024 by studying for one hour every day using online courses, books, and podcasts.

Actions:

  • I will enroll in an online TOEFL preparation course and complete one lesson every week.
  • I will read one English book every month and write a summary of it in English.
  • I will listen to one English podcast every day and take notes of the new words and phrases that I learn.
  • I will practice speaking English with a native speaker online once a week.

Obstacles:

  • I might get bored or distracted while studying.
  • I might not have enough time or money to study.
  • I might feel nervous or shy while speaking English.

Solutions:

  • I will choose interesting and relevant materials that suit my level and goals.
  • I will create a study schedule and stick to it. I will also set a budget and look for free or affordable resources.
  • I will remind myself of the benefits of learning English and the rewards that I will get. I will also find a supportive and friendly partner to practice with.

Rewards:

  • I will treat myself to a movie or a meal after completing each lesson, book, or podcast.
  • I will buy myself a new gadget or a trip after scoring at least 90% on the TOEFL test.

Review: I will review my goal and my progress every week and make adjustments as needed.

By setting SMART goals, you can increase your chances of achieving them. SMART goals can help you clarify your vision, focus your efforts, use your resources wisely, and celebrate your achievements. So what are you waiting for? Start setting SMART goals today and make your dreams come true!

A silly note

You're the one who started reach me again after all the silence You don't know how I tried to mute any things related to you I was successfully working on that, although my mind was never failed to remember you Turns out, the first message you sent after a long-break, was mean nothing You wanted something from me, you get it, and that's all Well, I knew, but I just let it happened I was happy for that short time we spend together, a very short time~ Then I completely lost myself trying to understand what was just happened I want to erase all memories, to erase you from my life, completely, without any single trace But again, it would just be a waste of time The harder I try to forget you, the more I'll remember you So, tell me, what should I do? When all I want is you When all I want to do is reach you out When all I want to do is to be with you When all I want to do is seeing you But you don't want anything about me, at least from what I know so far I have told you
